I had the pleasure of attending the 2016 Her Universe Fashion Show during this year's San Diego Comic-Con. Her Universe is a women run fashion label that caters to the geek girl crowd, from tee shirts to dresses and more, with sci-fi, comics and fantasy themes. A few years ago they started hosting a design competition and runway show at Comic-Con. Designers submit sketches of couture runway looks inspired by their favorite geek fandom. Of them 27 designers were selected to create the garment and compete. It was inspiring to see so much creativity walk the runway—sewn by professionals and hobby sewist alike. The show was dazzling, it was so difficult to pick a favorite design!
The competitors weren't the only ones dressed in their best, Host and CEO of Her Universe Ashley Eckstein dazzled in a custom made Lego dress created by previous winner Andrew MacLaine and LEGO artist Nathan Sawaya.

At the end of the runway show the audience and press were challenged with picking just one contestant for the audience winner. The judges, including last years two winners Kelly Cercone and Leetal Platt chose the best technical design. The winners are...
Hannah Lees Kent- Judges Choice
Hanna’s dress is inspired by Furiosa of Mad Max: Fury Road. It featured hand dyed and airbrushed fabric, a structured bodice and overall exhibit of patterning, sewing and fitting skills.
Camille Falciola- Audience Choice
Camille’s dress is Harry Potter themed, with a disappearing Marauder’s Map. Flipping the skirt made the map vanish!
Congratulations to the winners!
Sad you missed the show? This year the whole design and fabrication process was documented by Comic-Con HQ for viewers at home to enjoy a la Project Runway. The grand finale is a recording of the fashion show. Check it out here. Online Viewers get a chance to vote for their favorite runway look, ballots are due by August 11th at midnight.
EDIT- The online winner is Jesse Thaxton's "Falkor" from The Never Ending Story. Congrats Jesse!
Check out photos below of the whole fashion show, courtesy of Sean Kinney. I’ve included the contestant names and project titles for easy voting over at Her Universe HQ.
Many thanks to Sean Kinney for photographing the event
