Welcome back to sewing School! This week I'm going to teach you how to do a hand rolled hem at the sewing machine. This is a very fast way to finish raw edges- you don't pre press the fabric or use sewing pins. It takes a bit of practice but is well worth the investment in time.
I learned this trick on a special project I did a few years ago. I spent a two weeks in Northern California working with a team of stitchers, pattern makers and tailors making custom costumes for a large wedding. The event was designed by Ngila Dickson, Costume designer of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. She brought her team of craftspeople with her from New Zealand and this is one of the many tricks I learned working under them.
I hope you enjoy the tutorial- grab some scrap fabric and hem, hem, hem!
